A Nightmare on Boyz Town

Last Saturday (October 31, 2009) saw the annual Halloween celebration in Pattaya and visitors to Boyz Town could easily have thought that they had arrived on the film set of a horror movie or even the Emergency Room of their local hospital!

When the bars asked the staff to dress for Halloween there was no stopping them and the result was an electric atmosphere that lasted well into the early hours of Sunday morning.

The soi was decked out in orange and black balloons, a giant witch was mounted outside Boyz Boyz Boyz and the entrance to Copa Showbar looked like a ghost train.

Customers at Funny Boys were met by a selection of ghouls (or is that ghoulies) demons and a goblin! Whilst at Oscars the "walking dead" (well "mincing dead") put the wind up their customers. The Bar at the Serene Hotel was staffed by a selection of evil lady-boys (as they are most nights – sorry only joking!).

The two show bars in the soi produced special Halloween "treats" for the evening and both of "witch" played to full houses.

Copa Showbar and Oscars both held competitions for the best costumes with cash prizes. The winner at Copa was waiter Bank and at Oscars, Micky (pictured above) took the prize.

It was a fun evening enjoyed by both staff and customers.

Baby Nong Non: update

For several weeks during September and October we ran an article about Baby Nong Non and the help that he and his family had received, but further help was needed.

David from Oscars in Boyz Town and Thais4Life has informed us that: "A very nice gentleman, who wishes to remain anonymous, walked in to Oscars at the weekend, who had seen the appeal and handed David 5,000 Baht which is to be used to greatly enhance the life of Baby Nong Non".

David added: "I would just like to say a special thanks to my Irish friend". And so say all of us.

Miss International Queen 2009
From AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

PATTAYA: Shimmering in a gold evening gown, a Japanese television host wept and called for greater tolerance as she was crowned the world's most beautiful transsexual at a pageant in Thailand.

Miss International Queen 2009 Haruna Al Japan is flanked
by first runner-up Kangsadal Wongdusadeekul of Thailand (right)
and second runner-up Daniela Marquez of Brazil at Tiffany's
show Pattaya, billed as the world's largest transsexual cabaret.
PHOTO: AFP

Ms Haruna Ai, 37, beat 20 other contestants at the Miss International Queen 2009 who came to the Thai beach resort of Pattaya from as far as Brazil and the United States.

'I am very, very, very happy,' she said in tears, minutes after the previous title holder placed a tiara on her head. 'I want contests like this to show everyone that they should love each other and live freely,' she said.

Millions of Thais watched the show live on television on Saturday as the beauties - all born men but whose sexual identification is entirely with the opposite sex - strutted their stuff at Tiffany's Show Pattaya, billed as the world's largest transsexual cabaret.

Despite Thailand's tolerant reputation, transsexuals complain they are legally discriminated against as they cannot change their gender on ID cards.

REPORTS OF EVENTS

Loi Krathong
It's nights like the 2nd November 2009, when you think that you're lucky to be in Pattaya. There was a little activity in the bars, and Sunee Plaza was quiet. The reason - everyone had gone to the beach at Jomtien. There were some lovely "Krathong" in some of the bars - the wonderful one pictured was in Come In Bar. There were also some well dressed boys in Up 2 U bar, but generally it was quiet. On the beach, however, it was a different story! The parties were in full swing and everyone was having fun. The krathong were launched into the sea, with wishes for the future, and just for a change, they weren't ravaged by small boys looking for coins. The korm fai were sent sailing airwards and made a wonderful picture for all to see. There were LOTS of fireworks, the boys drank a little whiskey and danced, and generally had a great evening. Sitting in a deckchair, at the start of November, in wonderfully pleasant weather, with a party that must have had 100,000 people at it, gives one a great feeling. Thanks Pattaya for a really good night.

Wan's Birthday Party
High season must be upon us as Wan celebrated his birthday marking the start on the 1st November. It was a party that stacked out the soi outside his bar and gave us all a very entertaining evening. A good buffet fed us all, and then the entertainment started. There were the very impressive fire-eaters and jugglers. After that was a ladyboy show which started with a "taste of Thailand" and went on from there. At 1.15, the birthday cake was brought out, and a rousing chorus, of Happy Birthday (which could be heard several miles away) bellowed out.

HALLOWEEN
All Hallows' Eve can be a scary time in Sunee Plaza. The ghosts and ghouls come out in force and there's mayhem in the soi. There were dead things all over the place and there was a nasty crop of zombie boys and farangs walking around. The undead had a good evening, with several parties and some impromptu make up going on. Mike's Bar La Cage headed the party list, with a "trick or treat game" (do you really want to drink a glass of blood), a buffet, apple bobbing, and other silly stuff. Memories Music Bar had a party and decorated the boys and the bar. New Queens had possibly the most sumptuous buffet I've seen in Sunee with everything from dressed crab, shrimp and a whole table of yummy food (complimented by cobwebs and ghosts). Elsewhere, there were random dead, in many bars and places. Up 2 U and Don Plaza Terrace are just two I could mention, but quite a number were just shuffling around the place looking for their next victim. Their arrival was often heralded by fireworks.

A small group of judges walked around the soi and voted Mike's Bar La Cage as the best decorated, and a plague victim from Up 2 U (called Ton) as the best made up boy. I hope he survives long enough to collect his prize (a bottle of 100 Pipers went to each)!

It was a great place to be, and shows Sunee can put on a party, even when not trying. Just wait until the 15th November when we DO try!

Opening of Enjoy Pub and Karaoke
With a bang and a flourish, Enjoy Karaoke opened in Sunee Plaza tonight (30th). The place has been immaculately done out and looks really nice. The waiters are fresh and helpful, and although we didn't see them, there is the promise of Coyote dancers to come!

Tam and Rolph laid on a nice buffet and the locals had fun singing along to the music. The place looks new and sparkly. We all wish them well in this venture. It's another formerly dark corner of Sunee well lit up and now on the map!

Party at Place 2 B
Pooh at Place 2 B held a party tonight (30th) for the combined birthdays of three of their customers. I was told the combined age was over 200, but I can't verify that or tell if it's just a rumour! There was a nice barbecue buffet and a large crowd gathered to wish the birthday boys a good time.

Heartt 2000 presentation at Memories Music Bar
There was a merry gathering at SPI member Memories Music Bar Thursday Night (29th) to celebrate the presentation of a check on behalf of Gay Ting Tong forum to Dr Philippe of the Heart 2000 Foundation. The grand total raised was for the amount of 15,000 Baht. Seen here presenting the donation is Doug, Richard and the Boys from Memory's bar. Big thanks should go to Gaybutton for participating in the event and allowing himself to be gunked, also to Ian and Lee who ran the event for Ting Tong and donated time, effort, and prizes. Thanks also go to all who donated prizes for the draw. Present at the donation to Dr. Philippe were Paul, Doug and Richard of Ting Tong. Gay Button the man himself, Ian, Leigh and the boys of Memories. And many more people who made it a happy night. Report by John of Twoguys

Duc's Birthday
Some people are proud of their birthdays and make a big to-do about them. Other's would rather they weren't mentioned at all. Duc is in this latter category and had thought he'd got away with the event not being mentioned at all on the 28th. However his boys weren't going to allow that. They produced a cake and much to Duc's embarrassment sang Happy Birthday to him. A bottle of Sangsom as a present and a toast from all present saw Duc pass on to another year. Well done!

Three parties on the 27th!
I don't know what was special about the 27th October, just it appeared a day to have three parties in Sunee Plaza. First at Up 2 U they celebrated the birthday of Ton, one of the waiters. Some of his friends came in and they had a good time at the bar!

At Oud's bar, one of the oldest and most loyal customers, Jan, arrived from America. She had suffered a very extended journey and was very relieved to be "home". Known locally as "Oud's Mum", she is a much loved friend of the bar. The family treated her arrival with joy and celebration!

Last and not least at Krazy Dragon, it was the birthday of one of the customers - Candy. He lead a very vocal evening with much to drink and not a little karaoke! It was a noisy and fun time at the bar and all who took part enjoyed it (what they could remember of it anyway!)

Pool Tournament at Balkan Express
At the Balkan Express they had a Pool tournament last Monday. The players were very good and everybody had fun during the evening. There were 8 people took part in the tournament. The winner was Robert from Scotland. In second place came Nicolas from Belgium. Colin from England was third and Duck from the Balkan was 4th.

Gay movie banned from Bangkok Film Festival

A documentary that examines gay issues and the Tak Bai Incident has been banned by the Culture Ministry from screening at the World Film Festival of Bangkok.

"This Area Is Under Quarantine", a film by Thunska Pansittivorakul, recalls 2004's Tak Bai Incident, in which Muslim men were detained by the Thai military and packed into army trucks, where 85 died, mostly from suffocation.

The scenes of the men being held under harsh conditions, taken from suppressed video footage, is contrasted with interviews with two gay Thai men - one a Muslim man from Narathiwat in the south and the other a Buddhist from Yasothon in the northeast. The latter half of the 83minute feature is the two young men engaging in explicit sexual activities.

Gay pride throngs Taipei streets
By Vincent Y. Chao
STAFF REPORTER, WITH CNA

Rainbow flags covered downtown Taipei yesterday afternoon (Oct 31) as thousands of participants in this year’s Taiwan Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Parade took to the streets, calling on the government to better protect gay rights.

During the parade, songs from romantic and pop genres clashed with heavy metal and trance music. Slogans were shouted by dozens of different organizations. Spectators shouted encouragement. Others just stood, endlessly clicking away on their cameras.

Now in its seventh year, the Taiwan LGBT Pride has grown from a humble gathering of 500 participants in 2003 to become the largest annual LGBT parade in Asia. Organizers estimated that there were more than 25,000 participants this year, 5,000 more than they had originally expected.

The slogan this year was “Love Out Loud” as parade organizers hoped to encourage members of the public to love and not discriminate against their lesbian, gay, transgender, transsexual or transvestite relatives, colleagues and neighbors. They also called on the government to do more to protect their rights and lifestyle choice. They went on to say that both of the nation’s main parties have neglected their demands.

“We want to emphasize that we love this society and its people,” said Ann Tung, convener-in-chief of this year’s parade. “We want to exchange our love for the public’s recognition.”

This was a frank reference to an anti-gay march held last Saturday by several Christian groups. The groups were led by two former Presbyterian Church pastors who emphasized the traditional definition of marriage.

That however, failed to deter the participants, who gathered in 30°C temperatures yesterday. Parade organizers later said that more than 100 organizations showed up to voice their support, including students from National Taiwan University as well as doctors and teachers’ organizations.

Groups from the US, Europe and Japan also joined the parade.

“I think [Taiwan’s] gay scene is amazing,” said a spectator named Maria, who was visiting from the US. “It’s not that different to the one we have in Chicago.”

“Taiwan is very outgoing. Even in Japan it is more conservative,” said Naiyuki Fukai, who is an organizer for next year’s Tokyo Pride event.

The event ended at 7pm following performances by Tony Fish and Fish Leong, who was the parade’s “rainbow ambassador” this year.

Gay pride soars in push for equal rights
by
Phila Siu

About 1,000 gays and lesbians and their supporters yesterday (Nov 1) took part in the annual Hong Kong Pride Parade to press their demand for equal rights.

They marched from Wan Chai to Chater Garden in Central in their colorful and oftentimes sexy costumes, singing and dancing along the way while venting their anger at the city's "homophobic" laws and attitudes.

Most of them carried little rainbow flags to signify the diverse cultures in the homosexual community.

The parade's director, Connie Chan Man-wai, said the event gave the gay community the opportunity to express themselves with pride.

She said the parade has attracted participants from Shanghai, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore.

Chan said she had asked the Hong Kong Tourism Board to post the parade information on its website but had received no reply.

"The government always says how much it values equal rights but no official showed up today," Chan said. She had also sent invitations to the Hong Kong Tourism Board and the Equal Opportunities Commission, but neither had bothered to reply.

One participant, Joseph Cho Man-kit, said the parade meant a lot to him personally.

"In 365 days, we only have one day to be our true selves and to express our feelings happily and proudly. Many homosexuals do not dare let their families find out their sexual orientation," Cho said.

One of the parade first-timers, Ashford Pritchard, said the gay and lesbian community had always been "invisible" in society, marginalized by their own fears of exposure or by society's unacceptance.

The parade was a good opportunity to show that such a community does exist in Hong Kong, he said.

Another participant, Chung Shin-yan, said he joined the parade because he was disgusted with the intolerance of some religious groups.

The parade ended at 6pm after performances by several bands at Chater Garden.

Halloween Party 2009 – Silom Soi 4

Silom Soi 4 was buzzing on Halloween Night with several hundred party goers in ghoulish make-up and costumes, all out to ‘Trick or Treat’ their friends and fellow revelers. All the venues and terraces were full to capacity.

A costume contest in the Soi, sponsored by Finlandia Vodka and Southern Comfort offered a humorously macabre pre-midnight interlude. The contestants, who had evidently spent several hours preparing their costumes, paraded for the assembled crowd and judges were cheered on by their friends and later prizes were awarded.

A terrific and terrifying night in Soi 4 was had by all.

Silom Soi 4

www.silomsoi4.net  is 2 years old this month having first gone on line in March 2007. The bi-lingual (Thai/English) website encompasses all the night-time venues and events of Silom Soi 4 with up to date news reports, a comprehensive photo gallery, calendar of events, maps and area information. Links to venue websites are included and video clips were recently added via YouTube.

The website was considered necessary because other gay Thailand websites were regularly failing to cover important events in this popular gay Soi and frequently ignoring new venues.

www.silomsoi4.net is run as a commercial website receiving sponsorship from local suppliers and businesses to cover the costs of webmaster, translations, registrations etc. and any surplus income is used to promote Silom Soi 4 in other media. Last year we achieved an average ‘hit rate’ of 120,000 hits per month which gives excellent advertising value to our kind sponsors.

Koh Phangan increasingly popular in contrast with other destinations in Thailand

Recent research shows that the island Koh Phangan is not suffering the international economic crisis while the tourism industry as a total, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand, has hit a 49-year low and is expected to decrease by 22 per cent this year.

The number of hotel bookings on Koh Phangan in the first nine months of 2009 increased over 12% compared to last year. One of the main reasons for this fact is the continuous popularity of the full moon beach party.

Research by major Koh Phangan hotel booking agency http://www.phanganresorts.com also shows that over 85% of online bookings are around this world famous monthly event. Almost 65% of the visitors prefer to stay in or around the Haad Rin area where the party takes place.

Koh Phangan is part of the Suratthani province and is located in the Gulf of Thailand. The relaxed atmosphere, the beautiful beaches and nature and the parties attract a lot of visitors to the island. For a lot of people Koh Phangan is synonymous with the world famous Full Moon Party which takes place every month in Haad Rin. The party attracts between 5.000 and 40.000 international visitors every month.

   And finally . . .

Utter bad taste and politically incorrect and not even funny!

A young boy was sitting outside his Dublin house crying.

A passing neigbour sees him and says: "Seamus, what's wrong? Why are you crying?"

Seamus replies "'Tis a terrible t'ing. Me mam's dying"

"That's awful" the neighbour says " would you like me to fetch the priest?"

"No thanks", says Seamus, "I'm not in the mood for sex"
