An appeal from Thais4Life

Readers of the PG Weekly Report, and Gay Affairs Pattaya, will be well acquainted with the work of Thais4Life – the methods used to raise funds and the distribution of those funds.

Full information, including annual accounts, are published on their website www.thais4life.com and also contained in our information brochure available at the bookshop.

The Thais4Life Charity Bookshop, located in Soi Yensabai Condotel, off Soi VC, is our principal visible and main local presence.

We have in the bookshop now, approximately 26,000 titles - and all these books have been donated to enable us to raise funds to help destitute Thais – including those in orphanages etc.

In recent months, probably due to the economic conditions, there has been an unprecedented demand for our books – especially those in European Continental languages – German, Dutch, French, Italian, and also Scandinavian languages, as well as English.

Although our sales are generally up on previous years, the inflation in Thailand has also created additional demands on resources available for our beneficiaries.

We are appealing to anybody – residents in Thailand, visitors already here who have brought books with them, or overseas readers contemplating a visit to Pattaya – who may have a few books that they no longer require, to donate them to the Thais4Life Charity Bookshop.

If you are in Bangkok, any books for Thais4Life may be left at The Balcony, Silom Soi 4, and here in Pattaya they can be left at the bookshop, at Oscars Bar in Boyztown, at the Bondi Beach Bar/Guest House on Dongtan Beach, or if you in Pattaya you can give us a phone call and we will collect the books from you.

We would also be interested in receiving magazines and periodicals, eg.
Spectator, The Economist (issues that are not banned in Thailand), National Geographic Magazine (from any country!), Time Magazine, Readers Digest, Newsweek, any computer magazines plus any European provincial magazines "Der Spiegel" for example.

Thank you – we hope that you can help us at this time !

"Fright Night in Gay Pattaya"
by GayAffairsPattaya.com

This coming weekend is Halloween (October 31, 2009), an event not usually celebrated by the locals, but when there is any excuse for a party plus a chance for the staff to dress up, Pattaya will be alive with "horny" little devils!

And there is no shortage of events on offer:

For those who like shows "A Nightmare on Boyz Town" where special Halloween shows are being staged at Copa Showbar (23.00 hrs) and Boyz Boyz Boyz (00.15).

At The Venue in Jomtien you are invited to "Meet The Venue Spooks" and if you turn up in appropriate fancy dress you could win a "Spot Prize".

Also in Jomtien, Bondi Beach Bar are holding a Halloween Party with "Special Drinks" and live music from 9pm.

And of course the Sunee Sois will be celebrating with parties around the Plaza, including Bar La Cage where the bar will be "transformed into a dark and scary Creepy Crypt" with Halloween games, drinks promotions and free buffet.

"Deep & Dark Party" is the name of the event at DusitD2 Baraquada's Deep Bar on Pattaya Second Road, where Deep Bar is being transformed into  "a spooky and mysterious playground where mermaids play and sea monsters drink away". With "Deep Shots" at 100 Baht throughout the night.

Away from the bars Pattaya Players will be presenting "Spooks, Spirits and Specters!" which takes unsuspecting spectators on a 30 minute guided walking tour of Horseshoe Point's breathtaking Three Kingdoms Park, highlighting ghost stories from all around the world. (Click here to read more)

Ironically Halloween Night is also the date for the final of the Tiffany's 5th Annual International Queen Pageant, the annual transvestite/transgender beauty pageant at Tiffany's Theatre in Pattaya Second Road. Visit their website for more information www.missinternationalqueen.com

These are just some of the events of "witch" we are aware, so  if you venture out on Saturday, wherever you may be, look out for your Ghoulies and don't forget to treat yourself to a trick!

Details of all the these and other events can be found in the "Diary" at www.gayaffairspattaya.com

Sunee News
from a correspondent

"Spice!" Magazine has a well-written article titled "A Look at the Sunee Plaza and Day-Night Areas" by Blake Allen in the current issue (# 48, November 2009, pp. 24-26. It describes dozens of beer bars, restaurants, massage houses, and A Go Go bars in these two areas. Link to article: http://www.spice-magazine.com/a1111-a-look-at-sunee-plaza-and-day-night-areas.

Memories Music Bar will host a gathering of representatives of GayTingTong.com on 29 October who will present a check to Dr. Phillipe Seur of Hearrt 2000. The donation is from a charity fundraiser at GayTingTong's annual forum party held on 12 October.

Villa Rouge A Go Go re-opened on 25 October. About 18 dancers. Unfortunately, customers, mamsans and dancers are allowed to smoke inside the bar, ignoring Thailand's law banning smoking.

M Club has reverted back to its previous name, Tom Yum A Go Go. Khun "M", who worked as the outside mamasan, is no longer on the staff of the bar. Location: above Forest House.

Jimm Jimmy James A Go Go is scheduled to re-open on 31 October in time for a Halloween party.

Up2U held a party on 27 October celebrating the 24th birthday of one of the waiters, Khun Ton.

Nice Boys A Go Go held a party on 25 October celebrating the birthday of Khun "Q", the doorman.

Redgy's Bar had a party on 21 October celebrating the birthday of its cashier.

REPORTS OF EVENTS

Peet and Pau's Birthday at Euroboys
Our very own poster boy, Peet, and his friend, Pau, both had birthdays today (23rd) at Euroboys. It was a low key affair, with plenty of whisky being shared among all the boys, some great display dancing from their own team and two cakes. The party only really got going when the poppers were let off and the cake was shared out among the boys and guests.

It was a nice event and a nice evening in a great gogo bar. Happy Birthday boys!

PHOTOS from Sunee Plaza Info

Birthday Party at Redgy's
Wednesday 21st saw a good party at Redgy's. It was the birthday of their cashier, Ott. He was given a good time by the patrons and boys at the bar and I heard the "bell ring" at least twice, so everyone had a good drink.

Nice to have a good party any time, and this was a good party!

Pattaya International Balloon Fiesta 2009

Pattaya International Balloon Fiesta 2009 is a magical spectacle of over 40 balloons of all shapes and sizes attracting an annual audience of over 200,000.

Held at Thammasat University, Pattaya, between 10th and 13th December 2009, the Fiesta is one of only a few ‘Shaped’ balloon events in Asia, offering a colourful showcase of hot air balloons from all over the world, including the USA, UK, Australia, Germany, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Japan, UAE, India and Malaysia.

The Fiesta is organized by Flying Media Co., Ltd under the auspices of the Sports Flying Association (Thailand), the Fiesta has become part of the media landscape with wide coverage in all media – press, radio, television and the internet.

The Pattaya International Balloon Fiesta, now in its third year, builds international awareness of Thailand, showcasing the wonderful weather conditions for balloon flying.

The Fiesta comprises a plethora of events providing spectators with a fun packed magical long weekend of entertainment including:

• Balloon Flights
• Exhibition
• Air Show From The Sports Flying Association (Thailand)
• International Kite Show From Sanook Sky Kite
• Fun Fair From Horseshoe Point
• Shaped Balloon Night Glow
• Model Balloon Music Light And Sound
• Kite Night Flight
• Fireworks Show

At the Balloon Fiesta there are no viewing stands – people walk the field and are part of the action.

Balloon flights take place in the early hours each morning, before the air heats up, and each evening, when the air cools down. Meeting time is typically one hour before sunrise/sunset at a launch site.

As the sun peeks/dips over the horizon, the balloon will gently lift off skyward into the calm breeze guiding it. The bird’s eye view is surprisingly detailed. Breathtaking panoramic views of distant mountains, the lush green valleys, picturesque bays, aerial views of striking golden temples and rural villages, are sure to take your breath away.

Seeing Thailand by way of a gentle free-floating balloon is the experience of a lifetime.

The parade will begin at Kaidagelan Boulevard (in front of the Office of the President), going through Ai-Guo W. Rd., Chung Hua Rd. and passing several LGBT historical landmarks, before returning to Boulevard where a concert and party will be held.

Malaysia-born pop singer Fish Leong, who is widely popular in the Chinese pop scene after launching her career in Taiwan more than a decade ago, has been named the “Rainbow ambassador” and will perform at the concert.

The organisers will donate 20% of personal donations to help rebuild the tribal villages devastated by Typhoon Morakot when it slammed into Taiwan on August 8.

Hong Kong Pride

'Be proud, be yourself' is the theme for Hong Kong’s second gay pride parade to be held Nov 1 this year.

“’Be Proud’ is an attitude. It represents self-confidence, courage, honour, and joy. It means striding with assurance, with energy and full gear! ‘Be yourself’ is a living direction, and cannot be isolated by age, race, colour, language, gender and sexual orientation,” organisers explain on the parade's website.

Organisers Women Coalition of HKSAR, Rainbow of Hong Kong, Midnight Blue, Nutong Xueshe, Gay Harmony say they expect to attract a greater turnout than last year’s 1,000 participants.

Although the parade is only the territory’s second, the same organisers and the LGBT community in Hong Kong have commemorated International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) with a parade for three consecutive years since 2005.

The rally and parade will begin at 2:30pm at Southern Playground, Wan Chai and will proceed along Hennessy Road (Westbound) to Chater Garden, Central where a street party will be held. Individuals or groups interested to perform at the party can contact join@hkpride.net.

Silom Soi 4

www.silomsoi4.net  is 2 years old this month having first gone on line in March 2007. The bi-lingual (Thai/English) website encompasses all the night-time venues and events of Silom Soi 4 with up to date news reports, a comprehensive photo gallery, calendar of events, maps and area information. Links to venue websites are included and video clips were recently added via YouTube.

The website was considered necessary because other gay Thailand websites were regularly failing to cover important events in this popular gay Soi and frequently ignoring new venues.

www.silomsoi4.net is run as a commercial website receiving sponsorship from local suppliers and businesses to cover the costs of webmaster, translations, registrations etc. and any surplus income is used to promote Silom Soi 4 in other media. Last year we achieved an average ‘hit rate’ of 120,000 hits per month which gives excellent advertising value to our kind sponsors.

Koh Phangan increasingly popular in contrast with other destinations in Thailand

Recent research shows that the island Koh Phangan is not suffering the international economic crisis while the tourism industry as a total, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand, has hit a 49-year low and is expected to decrease by 22 per cent this year.

The number of hotel bookings on Koh Phangan in the first nine months of 2009 increased over 12% compared to last year. One of the main reasons for this fact is the continuous popularity of the full moon beach party.

Research by major Koh Phangan hotel booking agency http://www.phanganresorts.com also shows that over 85% of online bookings are around this world famous monthly event. Almost 65% of the visitors prefer to stay in or around the Haad Rin area where the party takes place.

Koh Phangan is part of the Suratthani province and is located in the Gulf of Thailand. The relaxed atmosphere, the beautiful beaches and nature and the parties attract a lot of visitors to the island. For a lot of people Koh Phangan is synonymous with the world famous Full Moon Party which takes place every month in Haad Rin. The party attracts between 5.000 and 40.000 international visitors every month.

SPICEROADS JOURNEYS BACK TO A BANGKOK OF OLD BY BICYCLE

A boat laden with fresh produce pulls up to a house on stilts. A monk praying at a temple. Bronze bowl makers hammer away in front of an open fire. These are the sights you are likely to see as you leisurely explore the Bangkok of Old, the new day tour from SpiceRoads Cycling Adventures.

Suited for all riders, including families, the Bangkok of Old tour explores several downtown districts along Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River and its connecting canals to experience the serene way of life of the old Bangkok communities.

The tour begins by exploring Bangkok Noi Canal and the Thonburi Locomotive Depot before cycling quiet back alleyways to visit the bronze bowl makers hard at work in the Baan Bu community.

On the way cyclists stop at two fascinating temples — Wat Suwannaram was founded in the Ayutthaya period (12th and 13th century) and was formerly the site of the Royal Cremation Ground for members of the Royal Family and high-raking officers until the reign of King Rama V (1868-1910 A.D.); and Wat Sri Sudaram which was built in the period of King Rama I (1782-1809 A.D.) as a memorial of his sister.

The cycle tour continues on country lanes and elevated pathways to three floating markets - Taling Chan, the newer Wat Saphan and Lat Mayom. After a local lunch of Thai dishes at Lat Mayom, the trip then joins the sellers on the water and by long tail boat explores the local canals, fruit orchards and orchid nurseries.

The cycling is 30 kilometres on very minor roads, elevated pathways, through alleys, temples and villages. Cyclists won’t believe they are so close to Bangkok.

The Bangkok of Old tour is THB 2,500 per person and pick up at 7:30 am and drop off at 4 pm to Bangkok hotels by minivan is included, as are refreshments, lunch, a mountain bike and helmet. The tour departs every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday with a minimum of two people.

SpiceRoads is a specialist bicycle tour operator based in Bangkok offering a range of two-wheel tours throughout Asia. SpiceRoads tours cater for every level of cyclist and range from day-trips to complete country explorations.

Rice Art: Artistry on an organic rice field

The “Thais Love Thai Rice” campaign was set up earlier this year by Greenpeace, perhaps world’s highest-profile environmental activist group, to demonstrate the value of the Thailand’s heritage of rice cultivation. Its members have planted and sculpted with rice varieties a living field as an artwork on a rice paddy in Ratchaburi province southwest of Bangkok, and the rice field is now ready to be observed.

The ‘rice art’ project is aimed at encouraging the Thai public to recognise the importance of Thai rice and with protecting the country’s food crop from the ongoing threats of genetic engineering and the impacts of climate change.

Two organic rice species with two different colours were selected as rice seedlings to create art: an irrigated local rice variety in green and a traditional black rice variety.

Greenpeace’s rice field occupies approximately 10 rai (4 acres) of land, and the rice seedlings have grown into an impressive tableau of rice art depicting the rice farmers’ traditional way of life. The activist group said the cultivation has been done on the principles of sustainability, protection of biodiversity and providing all people access to safe and nutritious food.

According to Greenpeace, the country’s central plains, where the art field was cultivated, is recognised as one of the most fertile rice producing areas in Southeast Asia, while rice is the most important food crop in the region, which accounted for about 25 per cent of the world's total rice production last year.

As said by a local farmer on the organisation’s website, giving the same amount of yields, organic agriculture tends to use a very low investment of less than Bt1,000 (US$30), comparing to around Bt4,000 ($120) of agro-chemical agriculture.

For more information on the rice art produced by this sustainable ecological farming, check out www.greenpeace.org (TNA)

Chiang Mai Zoo snow dome

The newly-opened 580-square-metre Snow Dome is the latest attraction in the northern city of Chiang Mai. Soon to be the new home and play pen for Chiang Mai’s famous panda family — Chuang Chuang (the male panda), Lin Hui (the mother), and Lin Ping, their cub born on 27 May, the Snow Dome also features a separate area where visitors to the zoo will be able to see, touch and feel, and even frolic in the ‘snow’.

The Chiang Mai Zoo Snow Dome is set to be very popular with children and families. For visitors from Thailand, the countries of Southeast Asia and the Middle East, the mention of snow generates great excitement as it conjures up images of a picture-perfect wintry landscape they have yet to experience.

Frolic in the Snow
When chilled water sprayed from a nozzle comes into contact with the very low temperature inside the Snow Dome (which can be set as low as –5 degrees centigrade), small particles of ice and snowflakes form and fall to the ground as snow.

The Snow Dome includes a snow terrace, a huge slide, and a viewing platform. Visitors can make their own Snowman or snow sculpture, or simply frolic in the snow. Families and friends can engage in snowball fights or experience the thrill of riding down a huge slide on a donut ski.

The Snow Dome is connected to the existing panda display area and features a specially-designated zone and an observation deck from which visitors can enjoy viewing the pandas.

Chiang Mai Zoo authorities are scheduled to move the panda family into their new quarters and display area at the Snow Dome when the cool season in Thailand comes around again in the fourth quarter this year. The panda nursery is also located in this complex. Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui, the proud parents, are both on loan from China.

In the meantime, wrap up warmly and enjoy the snow at the Chiang Mai Zoo Snow Dome. Visitors will be provided with a coat and shoes to keep warm while inside the dome.

The admission fee is 150 baht each for adults and 100 baht for children less than 135 cm in height. Visits are limited to 20-minutes. The zoo runs a total of 12 Snow Dome sessions per day with the first session beginning at 9.00 a.m.

Great Comeback Line

A man was sunbathing naked at the beach.

For the sake of civility, and to keep it from getting sunburned,
he had a hat over his privates.

A woman walks past and says, snickering,
"If you were a gentleman you'd lift your hat."

He raised an eyebrow and replied,
"If you weren't so ugly it would lift itself."

At noon, a strange phenomenon happens when sunlight passes through the
balustrade of the bridge, forming a small army of…..
well……see for yourself!

Priceless

A police officer pulls over a speeding car.

The officer says, ' I clocked you at 80 miles per hour, sir.'

The driver says, 'Christ, officer I had it on cruise control at 60, perhaps your radar gun needs calibrating.'

Not looking up from her knitting the wife says: 'Now don't be silly dear, you know that this car doesn't have cruise control.'

As the officer writes out the ticket, the driver looks over at his wife and growls, 'Can't you please keep your mouth shut for once?'

The wife smiles demurely and says, 'You should be thankful your radar detector went off when it did.'

As the officer makes out the second ticket for the illegal radar detector unit, the man glowers at his wife and says through clenched teeth, 'F#&k it, woman, can't you keep your mouth shut?'

The officer frowns and says, 'And I notice that you're not wearing your seat belt, sir. That's an automatic 75 pound fine.'

The driver says, 'Yeah, well, you see officer, I had it on, but took it off when you pulled me over so that I could get my license out of my back pocket.'

The wife says, 'Now, dear, you know very well that you didn't have your seat belt on. You never wear your seat belt when you're driving.'

And as the police officer is writing out the third ticket the driver turns to his wife and barks, 'WHY DON'T You shut the f*%k up??'

The officer looks over at the woman and asks, 'Does your husband always talk to you this way, Ma'am?

I love this part.... :

'Only when he's pissed.'
