NEWS AND REVIEWS

1st Anniversary Party at Memories Music Bar
WOW, this was a blinding night! On 28th June Ian and Leigh put on a really great party to celebrate their 1st Anniversary as owners of Memories Music Bar! I'll let the pictures do the talking, but there was a free glass of champagne to greet the guests, a great buffet, a super video showing their first year, then the real entertainment started, with the Beer Lao team excelling themselves and our itinerant magician coming up with a couple of new tricks.

Lots of old friends gathered together to have a good time. Thanks boys for a great night!

San Miguel Light night at Balkan Express
On the 25th, Duck held a good night at the Balkan Express. The team from San Miguel Light came in and entertained us in the Soi. The music was loud, and not to everyone's taste, but it was lively. Impromptu dances from some of the staff livened things up and the team of girls who had come in tried their best to get the customers to buy SML. One has to give Duck an "A" for trying, not quite sure the execution was up to the standard though. Maybe next time they can bring their dancing boys...

One year at Memories Music Bar!

On Sunday June 28, Ian and Leigh celebrated their first year at Memories Music Bar in Sunee Plaza.

The invited guests were welcomed with a glass of "bubbly" and a complimentary buffet.

During the party the crowd were entertained by the ubiquitous magician "Captain Jack Sparrow" and his beautiful assistant. Plus there was a display of break-dancing by the Beer Lao Boys.

Ian and Leigh certainly have made their mark on Memories Music Bar and Sunee Plaza in general, offering customers a truly comfortable and relaxing environment with excellent staff.

Happy Anniversary Memories.

New Day for Shanghai Nights
By ARIC CHEN, from the New York Times Travel section

“BRING in the boys!” an announcer howled on a recent Saturday afternoon at Cotton’s, a bar in Shanghai.

The occasion was a daylong celebration with drag shows, Chinese opera performances, mock same-sex weddings — and, yes, a “hot body” contest — to help conclude Shanghai’s first Gay Pride Week. And as seven beefcakes, including two from New York and one from Indonesia, strutted onto an outdoor stage, a crowd of hundreds erupted in whoops and hollers before awarding the hottest body title to a strapping, six-foot-tall Shanghainese who went by the name Grant. He was wearing a pink “Beware Pickpockets and Loose Women” T-shirt, until he wasn’t.

“We realized that now is the right time,” Tiffany Lemay, one of the organizers, said of the week’s events. Well almost. Although China decriminalized homosexuality in 1997, visits by the local authorities prompted the cancellation of several gay pride activities. Still, the revelry bore witness (in some cases bared witnesses) to a growing gay scene that, despite the occasional setback, has contributed to Shanghai’s already vibrant night life in ways once hard to imagine.

There’s even an epicenter: a trio of bars in the French Concession neighborhood known as the Gay Triangle. Many visitors start there at the long-running Eddy’s (1877 Huaihai Zhong Road; 86-21-6282-0521; www.eddys-bar.com), a tony concrete-walled bar offering the kind of Chinese exotica (Mao-inspired art, antique door panels) that Westerners and the Shanghainese who congregate with them can’t seem to resist.

A stone’s throw away is Shanghai Studio (1950 Huaihai Zhong Road, Unit 4; 86-21-6283-1043; www.shanghai-studio.com), a onetime bomb shelter where a more eclectic, hipper crowd wends its way through a warren of rooms that includes a dance floor and a men’s underwear shop called MANifesto. Completing the triad is the intimate Transit Lounge (141 Tai An Road; 86-21-6283-3051), a favorite among Japanese men who come for the swanky red banquettes, loungey vibe and mojitos.

With their international mix of patrons, these and other spots point to Shanghai’s cosmopolitan makeup. But more locally oriented establishments offer something for everyone, too. Consider Bobos (Bugaoyuan Clubhouse, 307 Shanxi Nan Road; 86-21-6471-2887; www.bobosbar.com). Exceedingly well hidden within a compound of residential high rises (go through the main gate, turn right, look for the glass dome and head downstairs), it’s where you’ll find the somewhat hairier, fuller-bodied set, known as panda bears, loading up on carbs and singing karaoke on a stage flanked by an illuminated rainbow.

Or on Fridays through Sundays, there is Lai Lai (235 An Guo Road, second floor; 86-21-6546-1218), an endearingly shabby dance hall where mostly middle-aged men sneak away for a little ballroom action. Arrive early; by 9 p.m., the band goes silent and the floor clears out.

As elsewhere, lesbians have fewer options in Shanghai. But Shanghai Studio hosts a women’s night on the last Saturday of each month, while Tuesdays and Saturdays are marked off for lesbians at, respectively, the bar Frangipani (399 Dagu Road; 86-21-5375-0084; www.frangipanibar.com) and the club Red Station (200 Taikang Road, fourth floor).

A number of Web sites, including www.utopia-asia.com and www.shanghaiist.com, offer broad-ranging, up-to-date information on Shanghai’s gay scene.

But on the Saturday night of gay pride, it was the beefcakes who resurfaced at D2 (505 Zhong Shan Nan Road, south alley; 86-21-6152-6543; www.clubd2.cn), a three-level club in the new Cool Docks retail and entertainment complex on the Huangpu River. Amid smoke, laser beams and the thumping of techo-dance music, a flesh-to-flesh mass of mostly Chinese muscle men suggested that now might be a good time to invest in fitness centers in Shanghai; it seemed the whole city had become one giant hot-body contest. Fully clothed, however, was a 30-year-old local named Pete. “Yeah, that’s the trend right now,” he said of the sea of brawn around him.

Silom Soi 4

www.silomsoi4.net  is 2 years old this month having first gone on line in March 2007. The bi-lingual (Thai/English) website encompasses all the night-time venues and events of Silom Soi 4 with up to date news reports, a comprehensive photo gallery, calendar of events, maps and area information. Links to venue websites are included and video clips were recently added via YouTube.

The website was considered necessary because other gay Thailand websites were regularly failing to cover important events in this popular gay Soi and frequently ignoring new venues.

www.silomsoi4.net is run as a commercial website receiving sponsorship from local suppliers and businesses to cover the costs of webmaster, translations, registrations etc. and any surplus income is used to promote Silom Soi 4 in other media. Last year we achieved an average ‘hit rate’ of 120,000 hits per month which gives excellent advertising value to our kind sponsors.

THAI GOVERNMENT EXTEND VISA FEE WAIVING TO ONE YEAR

Continuing its efforts to expedite the revival of the Thai travel and tourism industry, the Royal Thai Government has agreed to extend the exemption of the visa fee for tourist visa applications until 4 March 2010.

The exemption will apply to all applicants for visa on arrival at all international airports in Thailand as well as those applying at Thai embassies and consulates abroad for stays longer than the period for which they are normally eligible.

Thailand presently gives a Visa on Arrival for citizens of 20 countries for a stay not exceeding 15 days. Citizens of another 42 countries are allowed a visa-free stay in Thailand not over 30 days.

Those who wish to stay longer than those periods have to apply for visas at the Thai embassies or diplomatic missions abroad before their arrival in Thailand.

The extension is one of several measures taken by the Thai tourism industry to revive itself in the wake of a number of global and local events that have led to a temporary decline in visitor arrivals.

According to TAT Chairman, Mr. Weerasak Kowsurat, “As a result of the global economic downturn, the worldwide travel and tourism sector has declined as people have become more cautious about spending on leisure and business travel. Hence, the government has implemented many measures to enhance Thailand’s competitive advantage and strengthen our country’s unique qualities.”

Other recent measures include a reduction of landing charges for aircraft and reduced entry fees for national parks. On 1 June, the “Package Tour for Transfer Passengers” initiative was introduced. Transfer passengers making a stopover of 6 to 12 hours at Suvarnabhumi International Airport can take short tours of Bangkok and the surrounding area.

In order to tap the weekend break for short-haul countries, TAT has also introduced 72-hours travel programme booklets to several provinces including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Pattaya. The most recent programme booklet in the series is 72 hours in Hua Hin.

In 2008, Thailand welcomed around 14.59 million international visitors, a growth of only 0.88 per cent.

In January – April 2009, visitor arrivals to Thailand totalled 4.7 million, down 14.7 per cent compared to the same period last year. While most markets showed varying rates of decline, arrivals from the Middle East grew by almost 11.5% and arrivals from South Asia were up 3.6 per cent.

UBON RATCHATHANI CANDLE FESTIVAL 2009 &
THE 4th INTERNATIONAL WAX SCULPTURE

At Thung Sri Muang Park and Ubon Ratchathani National Muesum
July 1 - 31, 2009

FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS
1st week: July 1–15: World of Wax and Candles in Thailand
2nd week: July 6–12: A Showcase of Buddhism and Arts
3rd week: July 13–19: Artisans Assembly
4th week: July 20–26: International Dances: In Harmony
5th week: July 27–31: Honouring The Gurus

As the seasonal monsoon rains descend over the kingdom, it marks the beginning of the Buddhist "rain retreat" and the Buddhist Lent, or "Phansa", during which all Buddhist monks retreat to the temples. This is also an auspicious time for Buddhist ordinations as it marks a period of spiritual renewal.

Known as "Khao Phansa", the Buddhist Lent is a time devoted to study and meditation. Buddhist monks remain within the temple grounds and do not venture out for a period of three months starting from the first day of the waning moon of the eighth lunar month (in July) to the fifteenth day of the waxing moon of the eleventh lunar month (in October).

As Ubon Ratchathani province prepares for the Buddhist Lent, men folk, ordained as well as laymen, with artistic skills set about the task of moulding and sculpting Lenten candles. As these works of art are to be presented as Buddhist merit-making offerings, the artisans pour their heart and soul into their craft. Many of these are fine examples of Buddhist art and sculpture. The candle festival is unique to Ubon Ratchathani province and the customs and traditions related to this Buddhist festival have been diligently preserved by local communities.

A teacher's tale!

A group of children were trying very hard to become accustomed to Nursery.

The biggest hurdle they faced was that the teacher insisted on NO baby talk!

You need to use 'Big People' words,' she was always reminding them.

She asked John what he had done over the weekend?

'I went to visit my Nana'.

'No, you went to visit your GRANDMOTHER. Use "Big People" words!'

She then asked Mitchell what he had done.

'I took a ride on a choo-choo'.

She said. 'No, you took a ride on a TRAIN. You must remember to use "Big People" words'.

She then asked little Alex what he had done?

'I read a book' he replied.

'That's WONDERFUL!' the teacher said. ' What book did you read?'

(I love this...)

Alex thought really hard about it, then puffed out his chest with great pride, and said,

'Winnie the SHITE'.

Letter to God!

There was a man who worked for the Post Office whose job it was to process all the mail that had illegible addresses.

One day, a letter came addressed in a shaky handwriting to God with no actual address or postcode. He thought he should open it to see
what it was about. The letter read:

Dear God,

I am an 83 year old widow, living on a very small pension. Yesterday, someone stole my purse. It had £100 in it, which was all the money I had until my next pension payment.

Next Sunday is my birthday, and I had invited two of my friends over for dinner. Without that money, I have nothing to buy food with, have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope.

Please help me?
Sincerely, Edna

The postal worker was touched. He showed the letter to all the other workers. Each one dug into his or her wallet and came up with a few pounds. By the time he made the rounds, he had collected £96, which they put into an envelope and sent to the woman.

The rest of the day, all the workers felt a warm glow thinking of Edna and the dinner she would be able to share with her friends.

A few days later, another letter came addressed to God and in the same hand. All the workers gathered around while the letter was opened. It read:

Dear God,

How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me? Because of your gift of love, I was able to fix a glorious dinner for my friends. We had a very nice day and I told my friends of your wonderful gift.

By the way, there was £4 missing. I think it might have been those thieving bastards at the post office.

Sincerely,
Edna
